Youre Underqualified So What

Youre Underqualified So WhatYoure Underqualified - So WhatJob advertisements can be intimidating - especially if youve found one you really want, but feel like your current experience makes you underqualified. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt apply.Applying for a job youre underqualified for - and even getting that job - can have a lot of benefits. When working a job that might seem out of your league, you can break the boredom you once had at a mora comfortable job, while giving yourself new challenges and opportunities to advance your career. So what if youre underqualified? Below, weve outlined how you can write your resume to align to your dream jobs description, how to nail the interview (and post-interview), and how to set yourself up for success when you land the position. How to Amp Up Your ResumeExamine the order of qualifications in the job listing. Usually, the most important ones are first. Focus on your skills and qualifications as they relate to the job listings fir st several qualifications. If you lack some of those, try to bridge the gap between those requirements and other experiences you may have that are mucksmuschenstill related. If you still dont have transferrable skills, determine if any of the qualifications are something you can start working on now, like knowing the ins-and-outs of spreadsheets or a software program.Secondly, determine your experience - whether its from school, volunteer work, an internship or other unpaid work. A potential employer usually will not consider your experience invalid just because it was unpaid. If anything, it may speak to your character that youre passionate enough about your work to do it without pay.You can also consider a chrono-functional resume. If you have skills and qualifications that are more important than your job history, a chrono-functional resume will highlight those skills and experiences over your employment history. This will allow your qualifications to be highlighted instead of bu ried by unrelated work. How to Nail the InterviewWhats the first step to nailing the interview? Thorough preparation.First, research the industry. Are there certain words youre unfamiliar with, programs you havent heard of, or general information you may not know? Conducting as much pre-interview research as you can will go a long way when youre underqualified for the job. If you can show that youre in the know, the job could easily be within your reach regardless of any underqualifications. When interviewing for a job youre underqualified for, figure out what makes you unique. What do you bring to the table that may be beneficial to the company and will make you stand out among other applicants? Determine what those additive skills are.Do you have any personal contacts who could be beneficial to the company? Or, do you have a certain skill set that the company hasnt considered but would benefit from? Discuss those additional skills that could potentially outweigh qualifications you d ont have. Also come prepared with a portfolio. If an interviewer isnt totally convinced that youre qualified, letting them actually see your work can put you in a different light and show that you hold the necessary abilities to do the job.Learn about preparing questions to ask during an interview How to Stay Relevant Post-InterviewNow, its the waiting game. Even hours after an interview, its hard not to sit by the phone or computer waiting for that call or email even though you know it could be weeks before you hear back. So, the next most important part of this job process - especially if youre underqualified - is to stay relevant and top-of-mind to the hiring manager.Within 24 hours of the interview, email a thank-you note to your interviewers. This will put you in a positive light, but remember to keep it modest. You can also send a handwritten note, between one to three days after the interview or the follow-up email, if you send one.Lastly, continue your research. If youre cal led in for a second interview, youll be able to show that youre still passionate about the job when coming in with more information than before. Additional research will also allow you to ask more questions you may not have thought to ask during the first interview. How to Be Successful at Your New JobThe first few days (and even weeks) at a new job are always the hardest, especially if its full of tasks and knowledge that seem a bit over your head. But dont fret just yet.If you were hired for a job you first thought you were underqualified for, remember that you were hired for a reason. Many companies go through a rigorous hiring process before deciding on one person - and you are that person. Also remember to be confident, as self-doubt can do a number on your performance in the workplace and can be potentially visible to supervisors and lead to negative consequences. Take that feeling of being underqualified and channel it in a positive manner like pushing yourself to be in uncomf ortable settings, learning new things, or asking new coworkers questions. Online courses, mentors and additional research can also help you gain confidence in new, uncomfortable work environments.Build an Impressive ResumeWith the right resume, you can elevate yourself to the top of the resume pile, even if you are underqualified.Create a resume that will land you at the top of the pile - and get you the job

What to Ask During Your First Week at Work - The Muse

What to Ask During Your First Week at Work - The MuseWhat to Ask During Your First Week at Work Your first few weeks at a new job can be exhilarating. Its often fast-paced and full of brand new things that can reignite a spark that you lost. After all, that mightve been your reason for looking for this new gig in the first place. But, it can also be overwhelming. And when you look at all the meetings on your calendar, you might think that your goal is to survive it. You can always go back and re-learn anything you missed this week, right? And in a lot of ways, thats true. Nobody expects you to master everything you learn during your first month, especially when it comes to understanding the finer details about your company. But there is an important question you should ask in every meeting you have (when it makes sense, of course) How can my work make your life easier? You might be thinking, I barely know where the coffee machine is How can I think about helping anyone else right now? And thats totally fair. But on my first day at my current job, my boss suggested that I platzdeckchen up meetings with everyone on my team and ask each of them this question. It was terrifying, and if Im being honest, I really didnt want to do it. But I didnt want to disappoint my new boss more, so I got over my fear and piped up.And when I did, I was pleasantly surprised by how it went. Some people had really strong opinions. Others told me that they hadnt even thought about it, but appreciated that I opened the conversation with that question. But what I ultimately learned was that your intro meetings dont have to be a one-way street. As much as you have to learn, its important to remember that you were hired to bring something different to the table- and you can do that as early as your first week on the job. Again, Im not going to pretend that this wont be uncomfortable. I also understand that in some meetings, this will be seen as completely out-of-context. But when the opportu nity presents itself and it feels like the next natural thing to say- challenge yourself to say it. And then, before you worry youre putting too much on your plate, know that you can respond with, Thats really interesting to hear, once Im completely onboarded, Id love to find more time to discuss how can I start making this happen.I know. Asking this question might not make your first month any easier, but itll make the exact right impression on your new team. leid to mention, itll set you up to prioritize your tasks correctly. So take a deep breath and do it

Improving Your Resume Spelling and Proofreading Strategies to get Hired

Improving Your Resume Spelling and Proofreading Strategies to get HiredImproving Your Resume Spelling and Proofreading Strategies to get HiredWhen it comes to resumes, spelling seems to come into the conversation at every point. At the beginning, you must basic question resume, rsume, or rsum? Once youve finished writing your resume, then youre tasked with removing any-and-all typographical errors. How do you ensure youre picking the right spelling and not making mistakes thatll have your resume rejected? Its easier than you think. With the below guide, you can ensure youll make the best impression on the recruiter and avoid losing out on your dream job because of simple mistakes.Resume, rsume, or rsum? This might be what brought you here. Resume seems to have three common variations these differ by country of origin, industry standard, preference, and mora. First off, you should never title your resume (in your resume header) with any variation of resume. The recruiter knows what y our resume is you dont have to beat them over the head with it.In general, the spelling resume is the US standard. Rsum comes from French, which includes the two acute accents . Rsume, on the other hand, is a mixture of the two, and is arguably the least preferred spelling. A basic rule of thumb is to match the spelling your recruiter has included in the job description.Naming your file One of the places the spelling of resume will become most important is in naming your resume file when sending it to your employer. When doing this, its best to use the US resume standard. This is because accents (i.e., ) do not translate well when being saved as computer files. Moreover, special characters can transform depending on device and software tools used to view it. Keep your file names simple and informative. LastName_FirstNameResume_JobPosition. Using this format, the recruiter can easily pull up your resume without having to rummage through thousands of MyResume files. Sending emails An other area where resume spelling comes into play is in emails, both introductory emails and follow-up emails. Again, in these cases, you should stick to resume as industry-standard. Tip learn more about how to send follow-up emails after speaking with a potential employer. The importance of proofreading So weve got the spelling of resume out of the way now what? Chris Paye (general manager of Jobs.ie) once said, If youre not willing to spend a little extra time ensuring your CV is correct and doesnt have any spelling or grammar errors, thats a red flag for me. This sentiment is shared among many hiring managers. While its a known fact recruiters detest spelling errors, more than 50% of resumes have some form of typographical error when submitted for review. Its clear applicants are lacking in strategies to keep this from happening. Tip has a built-in content analyzer that will help you catch errors in your resume and improve your content.Eight typographical errors to avoid on your resume The oxford comma Also known as the serial comma, the oxford comma is used to break-up conjunctions. This comes into play when describing your previous experience on your resume. For example, I was responsible for content creation, content distribution and customer outreach. This doesnt read as well as I was responsible for content creation, content distribution, and customer outreach. Its a simple addition, but an impactful one. Manger vs. manager This can be an easy mistake to make on your resume. Accidentally spelling manager as manger typically results from those who rely solely on spellchecker to catch their typos. As manger is a word on its own, spell checking programs may not always flag the mistake. University vs. university Particularly among those that are writing their first resume, its easy to fall into the trap of capitalising the U in university. This is only required if youre using university in the context of the name of a university. For example, University of Dublin would use a capitalised U as it is denoting a name. Ive been studying at university for three years would use a small u, as it is a noun, not a title. Defiantly vs. definitely Another easy mistake to make on your resume. Remember, you definitely didnt make any typos on your resume. Judgement vs. judgment This spelling error can be permissible depending on the context. In general, judgment (without the e) is the standard in the US. In the UK and elsewhere, judgement is used. You may want to keep this in mind if applying for jobs in either sector. While its not technically incorrect to use either spelling, youre better of sticking to the spelling that matches the expectation of your recruiter. Identity vs. identify When describing yourself, ensure you identify as something rather than identity as something. This can fly under your radar quite easily if you dont keep it in mind. With only one letter of a difference, your attention to detail is paramount here. The reason because The reason because is an example of a grammatical error many people make. The word that should follow the phrase the reason is that. Not because. The reason that Im right for your firm is I bring expertise that currently lacks and is preventing you from growing. Dont forget homophones Homophones are words that sounds the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. The most common example of this is to, too, and two. But there are also others. Keep in mind other common homophobes that are typical in a resume including Then / thanAffect / effect Youre / your Complement / compliment Its / its Then / than Typically, use than when referring two thing against each other (or making comparisons). Use then when indicating a passage of time. For example, Rather than starting with individual interviews, we start with group interviews. Then, we ask applicants to come in on their own. Affect / effect Affect is used when there is an impact on something. On the other hand, effec t is a noun. My strategy affecting business efficiency and grew profit margins by 10%. This effect led to my promotion. Youre / your Youre is the contraction or compound of the words you and are. Your is used as a pronoun. Your company culture is one that attracts me. As a manager, youre a great example to all of your employees. Complement / compliment Complement (with the double e) is used when something completes something else. Compliment (with the i) is an expression of praise. My marketing expertise would truly complement your current strategy. In the same vein, please send my compliment to the current team on the amazing work they have done so far. Its / its Similar to youre, its is the contraction of the words it and is. Its refers to possession, it describes that something belongs to something else. Its wonderful to meet you today. Ive been keeping an eye on your companys growth over the last few years and its revenue has been skyrocketing. Proofreading strategies to avoid e rrors Reading backwardsOne way to spot mistakes is to go through your resume from the end and read backwards. Reading each word in the opposite direction will make you spend time on the word and notice incorrect letters faster. This is especially useful when youve spent a long time writing your resume and dont have the opportunity to take time away from it before reviewing. List your weak spotsIf youre aware of the things you struggle with, youll benefit from writing a list of the things you slip up on and using it as a checklist for review after writing your resume. You can use the eight common resume mistakes above as a sample checklist. Google Docs Revision History When writing resumes on Google Docs, youre more likely to make mistakes on areas youve just edited. You can look through the revision history to see any changes that have been made and spot any mis-edits. Try a different format The longer you stare at the same piece of paper the less likely you are to pay attention to its details. Your attention span can only endure for so long. To do this, you can print your resume out and review it in a physical form instead of on your device. Tip With , you can change your resume format from double column to single column, single column to compact, and more. This can be used to refresh your mind when checking for mistakes. Change your font Changing the font of your resume will transform the way you look at your content. The best way to do this is to change to a different type of font. For example, if youre using a Serif font, change to a sans serif font and so on. Content Analyzer When building your resume with , you can make use of our content analyzer. You can utilise s built-in referral link to accomplish this. When it comes to resume spelling The spelling of resume may differ from person-to-person, but the expectations of an applicant are pretty much the same no matter where you go. More than half of resumes have typos, so ensuring yours isnt one of them will allow you to stand out. Is On-site Childcare Beneficial - Spark Hire

Is On-site Childcare Beneficial - Spark HireIt seems as though with each passing month the demands of employees and job seekers are getting more and more interesting. Articles on how top companies offer employee benefits are running rampant lately. Upon first glance you may think that all of these incentives are a bit ridiculous. However, if you think about it a bit deeper, if you want someone to do a great job for you then you have to invest in them. You have to nurture that talent in order for it to grow and prosper. A neglected flower rarely blooms. One of the biggest incentives that candidates are seeking out is on-site childcare.Although you think it may be difficult to implement, on-site childcare services are huge employee benefits that will likely bring the top talent to your office. Lets take a look at the benefits of offering childcare in the workplace.A study by micro-economist Rachel Connely and colleagues published in their 2004 book titled Kids at Work The Value of Empl oyer-Sponsored On-Site Child Care Centers covered the benefits employers can reap from offering on-site childcare in addition to other employee benefits. Not only is it affordable, but it is actually profitable. In fact, most employees stated that they would contribute to the cost of on-site childcare even if they didnt need it themselves. So why would offering childcare in the workplace be profitable for employers?Reduce the Rate of TurnoverBy offering on-site childcare as employee benefits, you are making your company much more desirable than one that does not. If you have hired top talent, but some of that top talent happen to also be working parents, then you are going to have to compete with other companies that do offer childcare in the workplace. It would be much more difficult for those working parents, that are also great workers, to leave your company when you offer such a desirable benefit. On the other hand, if an opportunity comes along with a company that does offer on -site childcare and your company does not, the employees you have that are also working parents will most likely jump ship when presented with the opportunity.Reduce Tardiness/Absenteeism Working parents often struggle with very busy schedules. You can make the argument that, as an employer, it is not your responsibility to bend over backwards to accommodate their life choices. This may be true, but at least half of the employees you hire will likely be working parents. Therefore, hectic scheduling and conflicts are sure to arise. Working parents may often have to call off work due to an issue with their childcare dienst. Perhaps the childcare center is closed or their main provider is sick. When these things come up, parents have to rush to find an alternative. Often times, they cant find a replacement and have to stay home with their child. When you offer on-site childcare, these issues dissipate.Reel in Top TalentAs stated earlier, offering on-site childcare is an extremely desir able benefit. If your company offers childcare in the workplace as one of its top employee benefits, then its likely you will reel in better, stronger candidates. After all, would a working parent be more apt to go with the company that offers on-site childcare, or the company that pays a little more? On top of that, not all of your candidates are going to be working parents. However, it may be something in their near future and they will be more attracted to a company that makes childcare a breeze.Have a Positive ImpactRegardless of whether your employees are all working parents or not, simply offering on-site childcare shows that you care. In the study by Connely, she is quoted saying, I was impressed with the near universality of positive feeling workers showed about working for a company that had a childcare center. They liked the idea that their company took care of the person who worked down the row from them. When you show your workers that you truly care for them and their w ell-being, that translates into positivity in your employees across the board. Happy employees are productive employees. So you see, offering childcare in the workplace can be extremely beneficial to not only your employees, but your company as well.Does your company offer on-site childcare as one of its employee benefits? Do you think that it makes a difference in the talent you attract and the productivity/happiness of your employees?
